Over the years, I've been the recipient of various kinds of viral emails. As you know, I always keep my eyes peeled for factually inaccurate viral emails. There's another kind of viral email that has always fascinated me, which I will lovingly title, "Offensive Inspirational Pie". This is a viral email that arrives in the guise of an uplifting, sustaining, inspirational message from a friend or family member. Unfortunately, it also contains elements that are exploitative, destructive and in most cases negate the positive message it professes to convey. Generally, the offensive statements are found near the end of the email, and serve to manipulate folks into sending it on to others.
Here is a perfect example, taken from an offensive inspirational viral email I received titled, "John 3:16":
If you aren't ashamed to do this, please follow the directions.
Jesus said, 'If you are ashamed of me, I will be ashamed of you before my Father.' Pass this on only if you mean it. I do Love God. He is my source of existence. He keeps me functioning each and every day. Phil 4:13 - If you love God and are not ashamed of all the marvelous things he has done for you, send this on. Let's just see if Satan stops this one.
All you do is:
1) Simply say a small prayer for the person who sent you this, 'Father, God bless this person in whatever it is that You know he or she may be needing this day In Jesus Name Amen!'
2) Then send it on to other people.
Within hours other people have prayed for you,and you caused a multitude of people to pray to God for other people. Then sit back and watch the power of God work in your life for doing the thing that you know He loves.
There's lots to be said about this load of B.S. What I find offensive is that someone would take one of the most cherished verses in the Christian faith, slather it with excrement, serve it up to others and declare it "nourishment." John 3:16 is undeniably the heart and soul of the Christian gospel, and gives hope and purpose to millions of people. Why on earth would you tell someone God loves them, then demand they forward a viral email to prove they aren't ungrateful and ashamed of God? It's just a little odd, honey, to say the least.
Personally, I wish Satan would devote more time to stopping the spread of inspirational viral emails, and less time to destroying the world. |
