Editor's note:  The viral email below has been circulating since 2002 per Snopes, and as TruthorFiction.com will also confirm, it hasn't grown any more truthful with the passage of time.  Honey, you aren't doing our proud country any favors when you hop on board the scapegoat express and swallow up a bunch of lies about illegal immigrants.  Our nation has lots of very complex problems, and if we are ever to solve any of them we need to keep our heads and show some sense.  You are better than this, and I expect more out of you.  Now, straighten up.

There are lots of reasons why California is broke, and it goes far deeper than the problems caused by illegal immigration.  One factor in their budget shortfall is that Californians vote in droves for expensive ballot initiatives and then turn around and vote against tax hikes.  They all want nice stuff, but they don't want to have pay for it.  Here's a quote from an article that appeared in the San Diego Union Tribune in 2002 complaining that California voters loaded up on too many goodies:

To put it bluntly, we are broke. As a state, we cannot continue in this fashion for much longer...

...And misery we shall have if our profligate proposition habits continue in the voting booth.

It wasn't prophesy in 2002, it was common sense. Even the ever-controversial Bill Maher put in his two cents back in May:

You see, our state is designed to be ungovernable because we govern by ballot initiative, and we only write two kinds of them: "Spend money on things I like" and "Don't raise my taxes."

Long story short:  Illegal immigrants aren't the problem. Not understanding the problem is the problem.
