Lie Pie Title: Obama reads "The Post-American World" Editor's Note: Folks, let's all take a deep breath. First off, "The Post-American World" was written by the lovable Fareed Zakaria, who you've seen on TV lots of times. He isn't a jihadist, honey. He's a naturalized U.S. citizen, and many look on him as a national treasure. "The Post-American World" is an optimistic portrait of America's future. You can read more at Snopes.com, Factcheck.org, and UrbanLegends.about.com. And what if Obama was reading a book by some crazy radical? Honey, it wouldn't bother me a bit. I'm not afraid of books, and you shouldn't be, either. I'll tell you why if you'll give me a minute. I grew up in a very conservative home, and for some reason we all had the notion that some books were to be feared. I heard tale of folks who were Christians who read the wrong books or went off to secular colleges and inexplicably turned against their faith. As a youngster I lived in terror that I would be led astray by some seductive unbeliever, the wrong book, the wrong teacher, the wrong education, etc. The message I took away from all those I looked to for guidance in my faith was that Christianity was weak. I felt vulnerable and defensive every time I set foot outside my church. Honey, let me tell you something: being afraid of everything did far more damage to my Christian faith than any book could ever do. I won't bore you with the details, but I finally figured out that I had nothing to fear. Honey, I'm not afraid of books. I'm curious about everything and interested in everyone. What have I to fear? There's nothing sillier than being afraid of books. To those of you who are trying to raise your children in the Christian faith, you are doing your kids a disservice if you instill in them a pervasive fear of all things unfamiliar. Mark my words, your kids will get tired of being afraid at some point, and they'll run away and never look back. So this viral email is nothing but silliness from start to finish. Obama wasn't reading anything radical or alarming. And even if he was, it wouldn't mean anything except that he is fearless in his choice of reading materials. We all need to stop throwing ridiculous hissy fits over such petty things. Buck up a little, honey! --Granny, 5/30/2010 WATCH YOUR STEP: STEAMING VIRAL EMAIL B.S.
